Who leads Primary Languages at Clockhouse?

I am Miss Wilson and I lead Primary Languages at Clockhouse Primary School. My love for teaching French has grown over the years and since taking on this role I have become passionate in making the experiences in the classroom

What is Primary Languages all about at Clockhouse?

At Clockhouse Primary School, we believe that language is at the heart of all learning a pupil does. We have chosen a scheme of work that is both progressive and creative and that has poems, songs and stories at the center of learning.

Our lessons are taught weekly and consist of oral, practical and written based activities. The children will learn French in our school and will learn a variety of speaking and listening, reading, writing, grammar and phonics skills. Our lessons build upon prior learning and stimulate children’s thinking.

Through a creative approach, our purpose is for our children to develop a thirst for learning the origins and meanings of words, for example French cognates, as well as the importance of grammatical and necessary knowledge of linguistic conventions, such as conjugating verbs.  Our curriculum will aim to grow children’s confidence in their ability to be able to participate in a French dialogue that is accessible for a range of abilities.  Furthermore, children will be given the opportunity to transfer their speaking and listening skills by starting to extend their knowledge into reading and writing. This will provide an appropriate balance of spoken and written language and lay the foundations for further foreign language teaching at Key Stage 3.

To help enrich the children’s learning, we are equipped with child friendly bilingual dictionaries, a range of familiar fairy tales, which are told in French, for the children’s book corners in their classrooms and a variety of resources and displays to support the children with their learning.

The Primary Language curriculum has strong links with other subjects including English, Maths, Science, Creative Arts, DT, PSHE and Physical Education, whereby children can apply their ever-growing knowledge to both languages and other areas of the curriculum.

As a school, we continue to keep up to date on new and exciting changes within Primary Languages curriculum, ensuring that our children are given the best education in this subject.
