Who leads Art and Design at Clockhouse?

I am Miss Kearns and I lead Art and Design at Clockhouse Primary School.

Have you ever watched a child who is completely absorbed in drawing or painting? Their full focus is on creating something from nothing, using only their imagination and creativity to express a thought, feeling or idea. We nurture this skill in all children at Clockhouse Primary School and one of the main reasons why I love teaching Art and Design. Art gives children the freedom and choice to create something that is unique to them. Not only is this a healthy outlet for self-expression, but it is also an extremely important subject, with many, sometimes hidden, values, which supports the development of the whole child.

What is Arts and Design all about at Clockhouse?

At Clockhouse Primary School, we see Art and Design as a fundamental part of school life and are committed to providing an ‘Arts Rich Curriculum’ that engages, inspires and challenges pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design.

By exploring the works of different artists, designers and architects that span different eras, races, religions and genders, our pupils are able to think critically and understand how art and design both reflects and shapes our history, and contributes to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation. As a school, we strongly believe that if our children can learn the language of art, they can articulate thoughts, feelings and ideas about art accurately and, in doing so, use this language to express themselves succinctly when conversing about other interests and views.

Through our Art and Design curriculum, we provide opportunities for our children to gain deep understanding of all the diverse art forms and have their own experiences in drawing, painting, collage, textiles, 3D designs, printmaking and digital media. The skills that are developed in these art forms can also be transferred across the curriculum and thus aide learning in all areas of the curriculum.

As a school, we continue to keep up to date on new and exciting changes within the Arts and Design curriculum, ensuring that our children are given the best education in this subject.
